6 Things To Consider Before Buying A Cheap Vibrator
So, you want to buy your first or new vibrator and cash is tight? We get it, everyone’s doing it tough just now. There are a few things to consider before buying that cheap vibrator at the budget store and we’re here to help.
With most highly recommended sex toy brands and models costing at least $100 or more do you get what you pay for and how do you know you’re making a good choice?
Fortunately, while a lot of the best sex toys are expensive, increased competition, demand and consumer awareness is leading to less expensive sex toys that are actually good. That being said though there are also A LOT of really sub-standard sex toys on the market. Toys that are low-quality, poorly made and may not even be safe to use.
Here’s our top tips on things to consider when you’re buying a cheap vibrator.
-
The Material
When you are considering inserting anything into any of your body cavities (vagina, anus or mouth) then quality should be high on your list of priorities. Some of the cheaper sex toys are made of cheaper materials that may not be safe for your body. Inexpensive plastics, especially jelly like substances can include chemicals called phthalates. Phthalates have been banned for use in baby toys because there is sufficient research to suggest that they’re unstable and not safe. They can even cause reactions and chemical burns in some people.
Some other materials, like TPR and TPE are sometimes labelled as nontoxic, or body-safe, but these may still be porous. Porous substances can harbor bacteria, even after they’ve been thoroughly washed, causing them to breakdown.
So, what materials should you consider when buying a cheap vibrator? In most insertable toys, silicone is considered best. It’s usually soft to the touch, but is body-safe, long-lasting, durable and non-porous. ABS plastic is another non-porous and body-safe material for vibrators. ABS plastic is much harder and provides a different vibration sensation.

The Motor
What is the point in a vibrator with a poor quality motor? Are you looking for an irritating, lacklustre buzz or would you prefer an intense, deep rumbling vibration? Motor quality can vary widely between brands but a reasonably strong motor will ensure you have a toy that leaves you satisfied.
-
The Design
Sex toys really do come in all shapes and sizes now – from classic to dolphin shape and all manner of designs in between. Although some of these new wacky designs are cool, interesting and exciting, if you’re just starting out then it’s best to go with a classic shape and style. These are the most common shapes across many different brands because they work for a lot of people. We’re not saying that makes them a great toy for everyone, but they’re a good place to start exploring.
-
The Power Source
Do you have a never-ending supply of basic batteries? (Does anyone?). If not, then you really should consider a rechargeable toy. Almost all high-end sex toys these days are rechargeable. Rechargeable vibrators tend to be more powerful and more convenient to use, unless you forget to charge them of course! If you can get a rechargeable vibrator in your price range, it’s the best option.
-
The Brand
When considering a new sex toy, brand reputation is definitely something to think about. A reputable brand will feature on professional websites, quality sex shops and will be reviewed by reputable bloggers. You should be able to verify that the company who makes the toy is legitimate.
An Amazon web shop, selling cheap knock-off Chinese copies, may seem tempting but you will most likely receive little to no support when something goes wrong and you have no way to verify the safety of the materials.
-
Extras and Features
When shopping for your new toy, you should have a list of features that are important and/or desirable. You may not get everything you want but different brands and models can offer additional features. Here are a few key things to consider:
- Waterproofing
When it comes to sex toys, waterproofing is a top priority. Waterproof toys can be submerged and scrubbed clean and have the added bonus that you can also play in the bathtub or shower. - Storage
Some toys come in a nice fancy box (which you will definitely pay more for!) or come with a simple drawstring storage bag. This should definitely not be a “must-have” but it can be a “nice to have.”
Anything that you are going to leave in a drawer or under the bed can pick up lint and dust so you want to store it well. - Speeds and Patterns
We’ve seen vibrator’s with dozens of speeds, patterns and functions and although the average person doesn’t need this many, it is nice to have a few to choose from to suit your mood.
Summary
Can you get a decent sex toy without re-financing your house? You most definitely can but only if you know what to look for and do your research. No matter how much your budget is, a sex toy is an investment in your pleasure and you really don’t want to be left disappointed.
