Everything You Need to Know About Rimming
Continuing our month long Oral Sex journey, we bring you everything you need to know about Rimming. What is it? Who does it? And is it safe?
What is Rimming?
Rimming, (or analingus if you’re feeling posh), is oral pleasure of the anus. It can involve licking, sucking, kissing or any other pleasurable act involving oral-anal contact. It’s called “rimming” because the rim of the anus is where the action is focused.
Who does it?
There’s no denying that a large proportion of the population have discovered and embraced the erotic nature of anal pleasure.
Contrary to common misconceptions rimming is enjoyed by all genders and sexual orientations. Rimming has historically been referred to as a “gay” activity but in actual fact a persons sexuality has nothing to do with it.
Performing oral sex on your partner’s anus can be a part of any sexual relationship, whether gay, bisexual or straight. Anyone who wants their butt-hole touched can try this.

How to bring it up with your partner?
As much as anal touch and penetration are becoming more desired, some people are still grossed out by anal-oral contact, and that’s perfectly understandable. Always remember that nobody should do anything they aren’t comfortable with – giver or receiver.
However, if you are curious and want to explore some bum fun with your mouth, you need to start with the age old art of communication. Talk and listen. Explain to your partner what you want to do or what you want them to do to you. Whether you intend to give or receive, you need to be open and honest and non-judgmental. Actively listen to what your partner says and address any concerns in a calm manner.
How to prepare?
The second most important factor in Rimming (after communication) is cleanliness.
Taking a shower together beforehand is not only is a great way to warm up with some foreplay but lets you have a good clean too.
If a simple shower isn’t enough to relax that icky feeling then you can also use an anal douche or enema if you want a more thorough clean.
How do I do “Rimming”?
Any sexual activity should be about the journey, not a race to the finish. Start slow and work your way there instead of diving straight in.
Before you begin, your partner may like it if you gently kiss and touch their body and the area around the anus including the perineum (the area of skin between the genitals and the anus). Don’t forget to breathe! Hot breath against the sensitive skin can be highly stimulating.
When you reach the bullseye, think of it like your favourite ice cream. Use your tongue the gently circle the outer area then use long, slow licks flat against the anus. You can point your tongue to apply massaging pressure to the perineum area before gently penetrating.
Remember to listen to your partner and do what they enjoy, whether that’s licking, sucking or gently probing.
If you want, you can consider adding flavoured lubes – because they taste good! We’re not saying that your partners butthole doesn’t taste good but ,just like enhancing your meal with salt and pepper, a little flavoured lube can enhance the pleasure for you both.
Is Rimming safe?
As with any sexual activity there are some risks involved.
Bacteria
Cleanliness is important in all anal play, not just for the yuck factor but also to prevent the spread of bacteria. Bacteria and parasites that pass through the anus, such as E.Coli and Salmonella, can make you very sick if you ingest them.
Rimming on a woman? Don’t switch from back to front and as the anal bacteria can also cause serious vaginal infections.
STIs
If you are concerned about STI’s that can transmitted during rimming eg. Herpes, genital warts, syphilis etc then consider using a dental dam. You can get these from most pharmacies.
Most importantly – relax and enjoy!
