How to Care for Silicone Sex Toys

How to Care for Silicone Sex Toys

We know that after a good sessions with your favorite sex toy that all you want to is relax in bed, but it’s important that you still find the energy to clean your toy.  While some toys are porous and should be avoided as they are very difficult to clean,  which can lead to infections. Silicone toys are a much more popular choice as silicone is non-porous and extremely easy to clean. Here are a few tips on how to care for silicone sex toys.

Cleaning a silicone toy with a Motor

If your toy has any motor or vibrating parts, then you may not be able to submerge the toy in water. Start by checking the manufacturers guidelines on whether it is waterproof or not.  Submerging a non-waterproof toy can short-circuit the motor or cause other damage. In some cases, you may need to remove the motor before cleaning the toy.  Silicone isn’t porous so you don’t have to worry about the water reaching the motor through the material but there may be gaps through joins or seals.

Regular anti-bacterial hand-soap that you use to wash your hands should be strong enough to kill any bacteria. If you can submerge your toy then wash it thoroughly and rinse clean.  If you can’t submerge our toy the use a dampy cloth with anti-bacterial soap and wipe your toy clean.

Cleaning a silicone toy without a Motor

The joy of silicone is that it can be cleaned in a variety ways to make sure it is thoroughly sterilised.  This is even more important for anal silicone toys.  If your silicone toy doesn’t have a motor, you can easily clean it by placing it in boiling water for 10 minutes. Simply fill a pot with boiling water, and then toss your toy right in. Just make sure that your pot is clean, too.

If you’re feeling particularly lazy, another way to clean non-motorized silicone toys is to place your toy in the dishwasher. Not only will the dishwasher thoroughly clean your toy, but the steam that the dishwasher creates will sanitize your toy.

Too Lazy to clean?

If the idea of cleaning your toy every time you use it sounds annoying, then you have an option. To prevent bacteria from growing on your toy, you could cover it with a condom when you use it. Any bacteria that accumulates will simply spread across the condom instead.

Once you’re done playing, you can toss the condom out, and your toy will remain in pristine condition. This is not highly recommended however. We always suggest you clean and care for your toys correctly.

When you have cleaned and rinsed your toy, it’s important to make sure it’s dry before you store it away.  Don’t use the same towel that you cleaned it with as this can transfer back bacteria, defeating the object of cleaning in the first place. Take a fresh towel and dry it thoroughly, or leave it in a place to dry naturally with good air-flow.
When completely dry, you should store your toy carefully.  If it came with it’s own storage pouch or case then return it there to rest.  If not, you can store it in a silk bag or pillowcase. This will help keep it from touching other items that may have bacteria on it.

Toy Sanitizers

If you are concerned about using soap then there are some purpose made toy sanitizers available.  Some manufacturers now make sanitizers specifically for their products but generic cleaners are just as good.

When your silicone toy is properly cleaned, then you can rest knowing that next time you are ready to go – so is your toy!
